Olszewski Issues Statement on Retirement Plans of Longtime Congressman Steny Hoyer

January 8, 2026
(Washington, DC) – Maryland Congressman Johnny Olszewski today issued the following statement on the announced retirement plans of Congressman Steny Hoyer after nearly six decades in public office:
“As a homegrown Marylander and proud Terp, Congressman Steny Hoyer’s rise to national leadership has always been a source of deep pride for our state. Throughout his historic tenure, including eight years as Majority Leader, Steny helped steer some of the most consequential legislation of our time across the finish line—from the Affordable Care Act and the Violence Against Women Act to the American Rescue Plan and the Respect for Marriage Act.
His steady hand, moral clarity, and unmatched understanding of the institution has shaped not only the House of Representatives, but the lives of millions of Americans.
Yet even while serving at the highest levels of national leadership, Steny’s focus never drifted from home. The people of Maryland and the Fifth District have always been his top priority — whether advocating tirelessly to bring the FBI headquarters to Prince George’s County, standing up for federal workers, or fighting for resources to support local communities as a House appropriator.
When Steny Hoyer speaks, people listen — the mark of true leadership and why he is the longest-serving Member of Congress in Maryland history. When he retires, Steny will be remembered as a conscience-driven lawmaker who always did what he believed was right for the country. Our state, our party, and our nation are better because of his service. It has been an honor to have the opportunity to serve alongside him in Congress.
I congratulate Steny on his well-deserved retirement and offer my profound gratitude on behalf of the people of Maryland’s Second District.”
