Olszewski Issues Statement on Vote Against Republican Budget That Hurts American Families
February 25, 2025
Budget passed House of Representatives in a 217-215 vote
(Washington, DC) – Congressman Johnny Olszewski tonight issued the following statement after voting against a Republican budget bill that will dramatically cut funding for vital lifelines like Medicaid and SNAP:
“Tonight’s vote left no doubt: House Republicans side with Donald Trump and Elon Musk over the American people. This budget not only betrays the public, but it does nothing to bring down the costs of gas, groceries, housing, and utilities. Instead, it aims to pay for a $4.5 trillion in tax cuts that will overwhelmingly enrich the ultra-wealthy. Lowering costs for working families was the loudest mandate in November’s election, and this budget does nothing to deliver for them.
Instead, this budget will drive up the cost of living for countless Americans. It directly threatens nearly 50,000 of my constituents who rely on SNAP to put food on the table. It could increase healthcare premiums for the 29,000 of my constituents covered under the Affordable Care Act by more than 110 percent. The 152,000 people in the Second District on Medicaid – including children and seniors – could lose their healthcare entirely.
We are now 53 days into the Congressional session, and we have yet to take a single vote on a bill to lower costs for American families. This budget does the exact opposite. I am deeply disappointed by this vote outcome, but will continue to fight for the policies that grow our middle class and protect critical lifelines for struggling families.”
